Those of us who came to faith in Christ out of the so called “Jesus Movement” of the late ‘60’s or early ‘70’s were fairly emphatic about giving the “one way” sign (the index finger pointing high). It was a symbol saying that we were pointing to Jesus as being the “one way” for a person to come into heaven. We even had “One Way” bumper stickers.
Recently, I saw a commercial from a very large church located in the southeastern part of the United States. The pastor was pointing to a large screen with the words, “Most people see the church as being homophobic, believing that they alone knew the only way to get into heaven…..etc.” If he was suggesting that folks who had come to listen to him preach didn’t need to be afraid that he was as narrow minded and politically incorrect as those holding to such dogma, then we can understand why so many in the church in America today do not know what they believe nor why they need to hold to the absolute truth found in the Bible.
Somewhere in the past forty to fifty years there has been a drastic shift from the Jesus Movement’s “One Way”….to a false belief system that holds to the misconception, “it really doesn’t matter what you believe.” And tragically, some who call themselves evangelicals are openly declaring that faith in Christ alone is not the only way for one to get to heaven. Not wishing to offend the prevalent worldly belief systems, they will not confess that Christianity is the truth and all other faiths are wrong.
Oh listen dear brothers and sisters in Christ, if there were many ways to get into heaven then Jesus would never have had to come to this earth, to die on the cross as the propitiation for our sins. But the Bible is much more clear in declaring that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners…..and to destroy the works of the devil. (1 Timothy 1:17 and 1 John 3:8)
God alone redeems mankind. Good works, of themselves are insufficient. Pleasant and kind thoughts may bring inner peace to a man’s soul, but can never heal the prevailing inherent sin problem.
There is but one means….one way to get into heaven. Jesus emphatically declared in John 14:6 that He was the way, the truth and the life….and no one comes to the Father but through Him.
Any other message is false and dishonest.
