The famous hymn writer Fanny Crosby penned the wonderful words and music to the classic hymn, “Blessed Assurance”, that has now echoed through the church for over one hundred years. What a song of triumphal praise to the Savior of our souls! “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine, Oh what a foretaste of glory divine. Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.”
In 1873 Fanny was invited to the home of a very wealthy lady by the name of Phoebe Knapp. You see, Fanny’s home was in the slums, but Phoebe would often invite her into her extravagant mansion, which by the way, Fanny could never see…..for she was blind.
On one such occasion, Phoebe sat down at her piano and played a new composition that she had written that she wanted Fanny to hear. Immediately, upon hearing the music, Fanny clapped her hands and exclaimed, “Why that says, ‘Blessed Assurance!’ She quickly wrote the words and the great hymn was born.
That which Fanny Crosby had composed is a declaration to which all Christians throughout all history have clung. It clarifies the believer’s faithful position upon which they stand. The grace and mercy that the living God has bestowed upon all men who place their faith in Jesus Christ, is the affirmation of such hope….such ‘blessed assurance’, that they have nothing to fear.
So dearly beloved, the church should not get bummed out over the crazy things that are occurring throughout the world today. Jesus had said, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” The church, clinging always to the blessed assurance that Christ alone brings, need not get bummed out over the current insane trends that are occurring on planet earth. With eyes looking upward, we know that the time of the redeemed to be reunited with Christ forever is just around the bend.
The Christian’s testimony is a proclamation to Whom they belong……and the world can only stare in utter amazement at such faith.
