During WWII there was a saying that was spoken among military men: “There are no atheists in fox holes.” Of course it meant that under fire, every human being seeks God…..even those who might have vehemently stated that He does not exist.
The Bible is specific in stating that God has placed eternity in our hearts. Yet it also states that sinful humanity has an aversion to acknowledging their creator through that which He has openly revealed to us through His creation. (Romans 1:18-32)
So what is the evidence for the very existence of God? (It is not hidden; it is in plain view to every one.) Psalm 19:1-4 attests:
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech or language
Where their voice is not heard.
Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.”
“Daytime utters speech”, and “nighttime reveals knowledge”, is a way in which the elements of creation proclaims God’s glory in such a specific panorama, that mankind is without excuse. How can mankind deny the very existence of God when we are so thoroughly surrounded by it? The apostle Paul had written in chapter one of Romans that, “What may be known of God is manifest in (men), for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made……so that they are without excuse.”
God’s existence is so apparent. We ask, “how therefore can mankind choose to ignore and thus deny God’s existence?” Hmmm….in both Psalm 14 and Psalm 53 we get the answer: “The fool has said in his heart that there is no God.” Yet King Solomon had written that God has placed eternity in their hearts. And Solomon was indicating that nothing in this world can satisfy the longing of that which God has placed inside of the human heart and soul.
Mankind was created for eternity…..you know, the “forever” part. The very reason for this is that God created us in His image…..which naturally leads us to a longing for something outside of our current locale.
Creation is a clear indicator of God’s existence. Yet within mankind, in his sinful nature, there is the need for spiritual renewal and cleansing. This alone comes through the transforming work of the Spirit of the Living God when we embrace the specific truth that salvation comes by faith in Christ alone through His amazing grace alone.
