“But all that is in the world…..the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life….is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:16, 17
John’s exhortation to the church is that we are not to love the invisible spiritual domains of evil operated by Satan and his demons. The Christian is mindful that all that the devil offers is in direct opposition to God, His Word and His people. The inference therefore here, when speaking of the world, is not merely the materialistic, physical world, but the sphere of demonic rule that desires to deceive, beguile and dupe mankind into all kinds of erroneous thinking and fallacious philosophies.
The apostle is concerned about false teachers who claim to be Christian, but who in effect are teaching in effect the world’s philosophies. In their unsaved state, in rebellion against God, they attempt to lead the true believer away from love and obedience to the Lord.
Now all that this false system has to offer may appear attractive and appealing. But be mindful that the ploys of the devil has always been to make something that is a lie, appear truthful, desirable, and impressive.
There was an old country song that had these lyrics: “All that glitters is not gold.” The moral of such a profession is that a person must look more deeply than taking just an outward glance at such exhibition.
One of the major temptations is to incite the flesh. And by the use of the eye, Satan strategically incites men to wrong desires. In the case of Eve, Satan used something such as that as he tempted her with something beautiful, (pleasing to the eye), that resulted in spiritual death.
Yet the Christian must not love the satanic worldly systems because they are momentary in nature. Even the laws of physics point out that all matter is moving from a higher order to a lower order. That in itself is an axiom which points to the truth that God’s Word alone remains unchanging and eternal.
Therefore beloved saints of God, follow hard after the Lord. Seek Him and His righteousness with all of your heart. God’s offer is eternal life to all who will live in such a manner.
