There are instances in the bible, where we have recorded the works and deeds of a scoundrel. They entail those who are “troublemakers”, “men of Belial” (a Hebrew way of saying that they are base, worthless, wicked), and it was a term which came to be used of the devil himself.)
Quite often, those who are scoundrels are portrayed in “Melodrama” type skits as wearing a black cape, black top hat, a mustache that can be stroked with his fingers as he provokes the audience with a disheveling…..”ha..ha…ha…ha…ha.” The audience in those instances is encouraged to “boo” or “hiss” to show their disregard for this base and worthless character.
But what about the true melodrama of a real life that’s being lived in a real world? Oh the many scoundrels one may encounter don’t wear black capes, nor do they wear black hats. But they are deceptively and remarkably evil in their intent to serve themselves; to draw men and women away from the Lord; and to give the impression to the deceived that they are truly the enlightened ones.
Proverbs 12:6 speaks of just such a man. It refers to him as being wicked, one who walks with a perverse mouth. Remember words are important, and that word perverse implies that he knows what should be correctly communicated, but he willfully ignores it. In Proverbs 16:28, it says that he sows strife and that as a slanderer or gossip, he separates the best of friends.
And still we must recognize that there are men and women who will foolishly follow such base fellows. Again in the Book of Proverbs, chapter 17:4, we read, “An evildoer gives heed to false lips; a liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.”
Alas, how then will these scoundrels be recognized? By what means will they make themselves known? Proverbs 14:33 says that “Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding….(but now get this)…..but what is in the heart of fools is made known.” One such scoundrel was identified in 1 Samuel 25 as a man who’s name was Nabal. His name’s meaning was “troublemaker”, and the bible records, “so is he.” His very name gave profound insight into the character which he possessed.
A wicked person, a foolish person easily is swayed by such scoundrels. But wisdom will find them out.
